By the time someone contacts you they have already decided you are plausible. That decision happens fast, on a phone, using a short list of checks. Making those checks easy to pass is cheaper than most marketing.
What people actually check
- Is it clear within a few seconds what you do and who you do it for?
- Is there evidence of real work, with specifics rather than adjectives?
- Are there reviews, and do they read like people rather than marketing?
- Is there a real human attached to the business, with a name and a face?
- Does the site look maintained, or abandoned two years ago?
- Is contacting you obvious, and does it take less effort than they expect?
How to fix the common gaps
- Rewrite the first line of your home page so it names the customer and the outcome, not your process.
- Replace one generic claim with one specific result you can actually substantiate.
- Put your face and name somewhere prominent. Founder-led is an advantage, not a liability.
- Make the primary action the same on every page, and make it low commitment.
- Remove anything unmaintained: dead links, old dates, stock imagery that does not look like your work.
